Independent mechanics who know what dirt, weight and distance do to a vehicle, and who will look it over like someone about to drive it a long way from help.

The towns at the foot of the high passes are small and far apart. Lake City is about 55 miles south of Gunnison on Highway 149, and on the 160-mile Rimrocker Trail fuel is available at Nucla, roughly halfway. Have brakes, cooling, belts, fluids and tires looked at before you leave the Front Range, Grand Junction, Montrose or Durango.
Tell the mechanic where you are going. A vehicle about to hold its own weight back down from 12,800 feet on Engineer Pass deserves a harder look at brakes and transmission cooling than one staying on pavement.
Any competent shop can change oil. What an overland mechanic adds is judgment about a modified, heavily loaded vehicle that is about to spend weeks on rough roads: which wear items will not last the trip, what the lift has done to the front end, and which spares are worth carrying for your platform.
Typical work
01Pre-trip and post-trip inspections
02Scheduled maintenance, done with the trip in mind
03Wheel bearings, ball joints, bushings, U-joints and CV axles
04Cooling, brakes and driveline
05Diagnosis of the noises that started on the last trip
How to choose a mechanic
You are looking for someone who treats the vehicle as transport into remote places, not as a ticket to close.
01Ask if they work on modified vehicles. Some shops will not, and some only reluctantly.
02Ask what a pre-trip inspection covers and whether you get the findings in writing.
03Ask about experience with your platform, especially vans and diesels that need brand-specific diagnostic tools.
04Ask if they will show you the worn parts and explain what can wait.
05A shop that tells you what not to fix yet is one to keep.
What to have ready before you ask for a quote
Good information gets you a better answer, faster.
01Year, model, engine and mileage
02What has been modified
03Symptoms, and when they happen: cold, hot, loaded, at speed, off-camber
04Your trip dates and where you are going
05Service records, if you have them
Questions people ask
What should a pre-trip inspection include?
Fluids and leaks, belts and hoses, brakes, tires including the spare, wheel bearings, steering and suspension joints, the driveline, battery and charging, and the mounting hardware of every bolt-on accessory. Ask for the findings in writing, sorted into what must be fixed before you go and what to watch.
How far ahead of a trip should I book?
Far enough that there is time to order parts and fix what the inspection finds. A few weeks is comfortable. The day before you leave is how trips get cancelled.
My vehicle is modified. Will a regular shop work on it?
Some will, some will not, and some will but do not understand what the modifications changed. Say what has been done in the form so we can look for shops that are comfortable with it.
